Doppler Effect Examples

Blue-Shifted Example: Directly below are the observed absorption spectra of hydrogen for the following cases:
(a) not moving, (b) moving toward you at 3,000 km/s, (c) moving toward you at 30,000 km/s.
Notice that the spectral lines shift toward shorter wavelengths when approaching and shift more with higher speed.

Red-Shifted Example: Directly below are the observed absorption spectra of hydrogen for the following cases:
(a) not moving, (b) moving away from you at 3,000 km/s, (c) moving away from you at 30,000 km/s.
Notice that the spectral lines shift toward longer wavelengths when moving away and shift more with higher speed.
